ABOUT THIS BOOK
Shmarya Levin (1867–1935) was one of the great figures of the early
Zionist movement — a brilliant orator, member of the Russian Duma,
and close associate of Chaim Weizmann and Theodor Herzl. This
autobiography, originally written in Hebrew and Yiddish, was
translated and condensed into a single volume by Maurice Samuel,
one of the foremost Jewish literary translators of the 20th century
(also known for The World of Sholom Aleichem). The book chronicles
Levin's extraordinary life from a traditional Lithuanian cheder
through Russian Jewish society, the Zionist congresses, and his
emergence as a leader of world Jewry. Praised by contemporaries as
a matchless portrait of Russian Jewish life in the 19th century,
comparable in richness of humor to Sholom Aleichem.
