The French Lieutenant’s Woman is John Fowles’ landmark 1969 novel — a postmodern Victorian love story set in 1867 Lyme Regis, following gentleman paleontologist Charles Smithson and the mysterious, ostracized Sarah Woodruff. The novel was a critical and commercial sensation upon publication and was later adapted into the celebrated 1981 Harold Pinter screenplay film starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. It remains one of the most important British novels of the 20th century.
